The capital, Bismark is situated on the banks of the Missouri River although Fargo is the biggest city in North Dakota. The land that now makes up North Dakota became U.S.territory as portion of the Louisiana Purchaseof 1803.The region was initially section of the Minnesota and Nebraska territories, until, along with South Dakota, it was formed in the Dakota Territory in 1861. The state was quite sparsely populated until the coming of the railways in the late 1800s becamea state in 1889. During the runup to statehood, there was an intense competition between North and South Dakota over which state would be accepted to the union first. When the time arrived for their proper entry, President Benjamin Harrison didn't record the order in which the bills were signed, though North Dakota is recorded first, and picked at random which bill to sign first.

A North Dakota ranks 48th in public. There are four Indian Reservations which are unique in that they make their very own laws and have their very own authorities.
